The Cost of Sugar
Wales Estate, in Demerara, Guyana, was owned in the 19th century by John Jones, a Welshman, who in 1821, died by drowning in one of the Estate's canals. Nearly 200 years later, the Government of Guyana was harshly criticized for closing down the sugar estate and bringing thousands of sugar workers (mostly descendants of Indian Indentured labourers) and their families to a state of abject poverty.
